The only chemical used in the entirety of Kenya as a wood preservative is CCA (Copper Chromium and Arsenate) which has been approved by KEBS (Kenya Bureau of Standards) and PCPB (Pest Control Products Board). Since GTI’s takeover in 2011 from Telkom Kenya, we have made it a priority to support numerous orphanages and disadvantaged schools in Gilgil Town.
Unemployment is a growing concern within the community, leading many to addiction and abuse of drug and alcohol abuse. Worryingly, this is increasing the number of rape cases and pregnancies in the area, which is consequently leading to a growing HIV rate in Gilgil. Many children are therefore born with HIV in an area where there is little access to adequate medical assistance and education regarding the disease is limited. GTI is working alongside The People of Africa International Foundation (NGO) to help the children and adults affected by HIV.
The recent Covid -19 pandemic has also placed a strain on the Gilgil community and GTi took it upon them to help distribute food and some vital items to the families that had been displaced. We will continue to do our best to help wherever and whenever we can as we have always held the belief that it is our duty to help take care of our Gilgil community.
Helping to furnish schools that lack adequate furniture and materials has also been a priority for GTI. Providing school desks, chairs and cabinets from sustainable wooden plantations has had a positive impact on learning environments within the schools of Gilgil.
